Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus): how Amazon sellers get recommended.
What Amazon has confirmed about Alexa for Shopping, the assistant that replaced Rufus, and the listing and advertising work that gives a brand's products a better chance of being recommended.
Article
Alexa for Shopping is Amazon’s AI shopping assistant. It replaced Rufus for US shoppers on 13 May 2026. Amazon hasn’t published how it picks products, but says it draws on listing details, customer reviews and information from across Amazon and the web. So sellers win by making that information complete, accurate and easy to answer from.
This guide covers what changed, what Amazon has confirmed, and the listing and advertising work that puts a brand in a better position.
What is Alexa for Shopping, and what happened to Rufus?
Amazon introduced Alexa for Shopping on 13 May 2026, bringing together Rufus and Alexa+. Amazon’s original Rufus announcement now carries a note: “On May 13, 2026, Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping.”
The change is more than a name. According to Amazon, customers can now:
- ask questions in the main Amazon search bar, not only in a chat window
- compare products selected from search results side by side
- see AI-generated overviews at the top of search results and on product detail pages
- check up to a year of price history
- schedule routine purchases and price-triggered buys
Amazon also says the assistant draws on each shopper’s preferences, shopping history and conversations with Alexa, so answers can differ between shoppers.
Why does Alexa for Shopping matter for Amazon sellers?
Because Amazon is putting it at the centre of the store. In its third-quarter 2026 results release on 29 October, Amazon said Alexa for Shopping was used by more than 400 million customers in the previous 12 months, with customer interactions up 570% year on year.
On the earnings call the same day, Andy Jassy said US customers using the assistant spend 50% more per order than those who don’t, and that “we believe Alexa for Shopping is going to be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon.” He also said external AI shopping agents were not yet meaningfully affecting Amazon Ads, because few customers shop that way yet.
For a brand on Amazon, the takeaway is simple. Shoppers will increasingly ask a question first and browse second. The assistant’s answer sits between the shopper and your listing.
Is Alexa for Shopping available in the UK?
Amazon’s May launch announcement covered US customers. Before the rename, Amazon had launched Rufus to all UK customers in the Amazon Shopping app and on desktop, so UK shoppers were already asking an AI assistant about products.
Some features are explicitly multi-market. Amazon’s price history page says price history is available to all customers in the US, UK, Canada and India, with 365-day insights rolling out in the US, UK and India.
If you sell on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.ie, check what your shoppers actually see in the app before planning around a US-only feature. The listing work below applies either way.
What does Alexa for Shopping read about your product?
Amazon has not published a ranking method, and nobody outside Amazon knows the weighting. What Amazon has said publicly is useful enough.
When it launched Rufus, Amazon said the assistant was trained on its product catalogue, customer reviews, community Q&As and information from across the web. On a product page, it said Rufus “will generate answers based on listing details, customer reviews, and community Q&As.”
Amazon Ads says its sponsored prompts draw on first-party signals from a brand’s detail pages, Brand Store and campaign data.
So the inputs a seller can influence are:
| Input | Who controls it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Listing content (title, bullets, description, images) | Brand / seller | Factual, specific, localised for each marketplace |
| Product details and attributes | Brand / seller | Every relevant field complete and accurate |
| Customer reviews | Customers, shaped by the product and service | Recurring complaints, sizing or quality themes |
| Brand Store and A+ Content | Brand (Brand Registry) | Consistent with the listing, no conflicting claims |
| Sponsored ads | Advertiser | Campaigns live, budgets matched to stock |
| Shopper history and preferences | Shopper and Amazon | Not yours to control |
How do I get my products recommended by Alexa for Shopping?
There is no shortcut, and anyone selling a guaranteed method is guessing. These steps improve the information the assistant reads, and they help normal search and conversion too.
-
Fill in the product details properly. Amazon’s guide to creating product listings says “the more in-depth your product detail page, the more informed your customer can be”, and notes that the required product details differ from product to product. Treat each empty field as a question about your product with no answer.
-
Write bullets and descriptions as specific facts. Amazon Australia’s product detail page guide for sellers (a 2022 document) says not to write vague statements and to “be as specific as possible with product features and attributes”, including accurate dimensions and care instructions. Those details are what a shopper’s question will hinge on.
-
Answer the questions shoppers ask. Amazon’s own Rufus examples were questions like “is this jacket machine washable?” and “is this pickleball paddle good for beginners?” Go through your reviews and customer messages, list the questions that keep coming up, and make sure the listing answers each one plainly.
-
Read your reviews the way the assistant will. Amazon already uses AI to summarise common themes from reviews. If customers keep saying a size runs small, the assistant can pass that on. Fix the product or the size guidance rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.
-
Localise each marketplace. A UK listing should use UK sizing, spelling and units. Amazon.ie and the EU stores need their own checks rather than a copy of the UK page.
-
Keep pricing honest. Shoppers can ask the assistant for a product’s price history over 30, 90 or 365 days. A promotion only reads as a deal if it is one.
-
Keep offer details out of the product content. The same product detail page guide prohibits availability, price, condition and delivery offers in titles, descriptions, bullet points and images. Those belong in the offer.
Do Amazon ads show up inside Alexa for Shopping?
Yes, in the US. According to Amazon Ads, existing sponsored ads campaigns are automatically eligible to serve in Alexa for Shopping, with no extra campaign setup.
| Format | What it does | Availability (per Amazon Ads) |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored ads in Alexa for Shopping | Products and brands appear within the conversation | Existing campaigns automatically eligible |
| Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands prompts | Clickable prompts on results and product pages that open a conversation with the assistant | General availability in the US from 25 March 2026 |
| Branded Conversations | A multi-turn conversation that uses brand-supplied product guidance | Launching in the US in January 2027 |
Amazon Ads says prompts are charged within normal CPC bidding now they are generally available, and advertisers can see and pause them in the Ads Console. If you run Sponsored Products or Sponsored Brands in the US, check the Prompts tab in each campaign so you know what is being shown in your name. This is part of Amazon Ads management, not a separate project.
Branded Conversations will let brands supply guidance such as which product suits which need. Brands that already know their customers’ questions will have that brief ready.
What should sellers stop doing?
- Keyword stuffing titles. Amazon’s title requirements for the US store, announced for 21 January 2025, cap most titles at 200 characters and bar the same word appearing more than twice. Amazon said titles had become longer and sometimes included “redundant wording or characters that can decrease customer confidence”.
- Vague superlatives. “Premium quality” answers nothing. “100% merino wool, machine washable at 30°C” answers a real question.
- Treating ads as the fix. If the listing is thin or the product is out of stock, paid traffic and AI answers both have a poor destination.
- Splitting the work. Catalogue, reviews, stock and ads affect each other. Changes in one team show up in another team’s numbers.

Common questions.
Is Alexa for Shopping the same as Rufus?
Yes, in practice. Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on 13 May 2026. The new assistant combines Rufus's product knowledge with the personal context from Alexa+.
How does Alexa for Shopping decide which products to recommend?
Amazon has not published a ranking formula. When it launched Rufus, Amazon said the assistant answered product questions from listing details, customer reviews and community Q&As, plus information from across the web. Alexa for Shopping adds the shopper's own preferences and shopping history. Sellers control the listing data, the reviews they earn and their ads.
Is Alexa for Shopping available in the UK?
Amazon's May 2026 launch announcement covered US customers. Rufus had already been launched to all UK customers in the app and on desktop. Check what your UK shoppers see before you plan around a specific feature.
Can I advertise inside Alexa for Shopping?
Yes, in the US. Amazon Ads says existing sponsored ads campaigns are automatically eligible to serve in Alexa for Shopping, and that Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands prompts open conversations with the assistant. Branded Conversations is due in the US in January 2027.
Do I need a new listing strategy for Alexa for Shopping?
Mostly you need the old one done properly: specific, accurate product information, good images, honest reviews and a clean account. The assistant answers questions, so listings that answer questions clearly give it more to work with.
